Flavia sat across from me at the small table and shoved the last fork of homemade pasta into her mouth. The enraptured expression on her face alone proved that I had made every effort with the food. She could no longer deny that.

"What other hidden talents do you have?", she asked after she'd put her fork aside and turned her gaze to me instead of her plate.

I raised my shoulders. "If I tell you all about them, they aren’t hidden anymore."

At my statement, she twisted her mouth, not very enthusiastic about it. Of course, I wouldn't spread all my secrets in front of her. She'd to find out the things she wanted to know by herself. Do a little detective work. After all, I was no different. Even though I had already gotten her background, the night we rescued her from Antonio's house, I knew as little about her true personality as she knew about mine.

"You'll have to find out for yourself if you have such a burning interest," I finally said, and collected her plate along with mine to carry it to the sink. "By the way, Natale told me you knew certain things about my business."

I had turned my back on her, but I still heard her expel the air. Did she disapprove of how much I was told by my people?

"I picked up a thing or two, yeah. Like anyone who has any kind of contact with the mafia."

"Not everyone has such a precise picture of all the areas we’re in. There are only a handful of people who know everything."

I didn't need to see her facial expression to know whether or not her reaction was honest. Her tone of voice was enough.

"You get things if you listen well. You don't need a degree in rocket science to put them together. How was I supposed to know I was hitting the nail on the head?"

"Are you going to tell me who you were listening to?"

"Classmates."

I raised an eyebrow. Who had she gone to class with to get such a comprehensive picture? I needed to task Natale with getting a list of her former classmates and going through them systematically to find those families who seemed to think little of secrets and confidential information. And then ... then I would pay them a quick visit and remind them who we were, what we were doing, and why it was so important to keep their mouths shut.

"You're going to find them, aren't you?"

I nodded. "Of course. I wouldn't be able to sleep easily knowing there are some wannabes out there recklessly risking all our lives."

"Are you going to hurt them?"

Automatically, I raised an eyebrow. Her voice was suddenly cautious. Concerned. It irritated me, especially because I didn't know how to deal with it. People around me rarely minded the things I did to keep an entire empire going.

"If the roots are rotten, even the strongest plant won't survive," I said. "No, I won’t hurt them. I will remind them of what is important.
